USA - Prices Americans paid for eggs, meat, cereal and milk shot higher in April as people flocked to grocery stores to stock up on food amid government lockdowns designed to slow the spread of Covid-19. The Labor Department reported Tuesday that prices US consumers paid for groceries jumped 2.6% in April, the largest one-month pop since February 1974. The spike in supermarket prices was broad based and impacted items from broccoli and ham to oatmeal and tuna. The price of the meats, poultry, fish and eggs category rose 4.3%, fruits and vegetables climbed 1.5%, cereals and bakery products advanced 2.9%, and dairy goods gained 1.5%.
USA - Many people are warming up to the idea of digital currency in a cashless society due to coronavirus because going touch free is cleaner than cash. Many businesses are already moving to make digital currency the only form of transaction they will engage in so their customers and their employees feel safe. In fact, cash has become so dirty that some businesses that remained open in limited ways under the coronavirus lockdown are already turning away customers who have only cash to tender.
“Touch free” means virus-free. Touch-free Cashless safety is being bought at the cost of liberty. Humans, unless they are of the heroic mold — like the forefathers of the United States of America — will embrace almost anything to save themselves. Given a serious crisis, many will trade away freedoms that were once valued as priceless, though braver folk gave up their lives to attain such liberty for all.
USA - Bill Gates ...has gone on record saying life will not go back to normal until we have the ability to vaccinate the entire global population against COVID-19. To that end, he is pushing for disease surveillance and a vaccine tracking system that might involve embedding vaccination records on our bodies.
One example of how this might be done is using an invisible ink quantum dot tattoo, described in a December 18, 2019, Science Translational Medicine paper. According to statements made by Gates, societal and financial normalcy may never return to those who refuse vaccination, as the digital vaccination certificate Gates is pushing for might ultimately be required to go about your day-to-day life and business. Without this “digital immunity proof,” you may not even be allowed to travel locally or visit certain public buildings.
USA - Two of the federal government’s top health officials painted a grim picture of the months ahead on Tuesday, warning a Senate panel that the coronavirus pandemic was far from contained, just a day after President Trump declared that “we have met the moment and we have prevailed.” The officials — Dr Anthony S Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, and Dr Robert R Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — predicted dire consequences if the nation reopened its economy too soon, noting that the United States still lacked critical testing capacity and the ability to trace the contacts of those infected.
USA - Come spring, the American West's vast water reservoirs are supposed to fill with melting snow. However, this year, as in recent years, the large reservoirs of Lake Mead and Lake Powell in the Colorado River basin area have seen declining water levels — an ominous trend that a new study warns could signal a looming megadrought.
GERMANY - Over the weekend, hundreds of French and Luxembourgian citizens have protested the ongoing closure of German borders. On March 16, the German government unilaterally reinstated strict border controls. Since then, German police have prevented more than 100,000 citizens of several neighboring countries from entering Germany.
USA - A House resolution from Illinois Democrat Representative Bobby Rush that would put Big Government in charge of tracking citizens’ movements as they relate to COVID-19 mitigation efforts — even sending health bureaucrats to “individuals’ residences,” “as necessary,” as the legislation states — has a most apt number: 6666.
EUROPE - Billionaire philanthropist George Soros has predicted that coronavirus could bring about the end of the EU. Soros expressed his doubts about the institution's survival as it is an 'incomplete union' and cited Germany's ruling on the European Central Bank as a cause for concern.
EUROPE - The European Union's old wounds have been exposed by coronavirus in a potentially fatal blow, France's former European affairs minister Elisabeth Guigou has warned. EU officials in Brussels have repeatedly urged national capitals to show solidarity, but the health crisis has only underlined existing divisions and tensions between member states.
USA - We recently detailed how when America’s white collar work force returns to their offices, business complexes, and sky scrapers, their experience in the post-COVID ‘reopened’ work space is likely to resemble something more like an airport security check zone, complete with invasive protocols like frequent temperature checks and ‘social distancing’ and health surveillance, as well as Plexiglass enclosed cubicles and HR-style enforcement monitors.
USA - There’s been a concerted effort recently among the oligarchs I like to call The Davos Crowd to demonize cash. From hedge fund manager Ray Dalio pronouncing ‘Cash is trash’ earlier this year to the fear-mongering surrounding COVID-19 making people fearful of dealing in cash because it might be tainted the anti-cash rhetoric has been amped up to eleven.
USA - Within the past several days, large earthquakes have been striking all along the outer rim of the Pacific Ocean, and many are wondering if all of this activity could potentially be building up to something really big.
JAPAN - Japan has been rocked by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, USGS has confirmed. The epicentre of the earthquake was off the coast of Ibaraki prefecture, north of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. It comes after a 5.2 earthquake struck just over 50 miles from Fukushima, which is home to 300,000 people, in February.
USA - Anyone that was hoping for a “quick recovery” for the US economy can forget about that right now. Yes, many states are attempting to “reopen”, but in most cases it will be a multi-stage process that takes many months to complete. Meanwhile, fear of COVID-19 is going to keep many Americans from conducting business as usual even after all of the restrictions have been finally lifted. Even now, many of the stores, restaurants and movie theaters that have reopened are seeing very, very few customers.
USA - On Thursday we noted that April orders for class 8 heavy trucks fell a staggering 73% year over year, and 44% from March - the worst order numbers on record as coronavirus shutdowns have put the trucking industry on the cusp of a "freight cliff" according to a FEMA report obtained by Politico. Unsurprisingly, truck drivers have suffered an absolute bloodbath - losing approximately 88,300 jobs in April alone, according to Business Insider, which notes that it's the largest single-month loss of trucking jobs on record. And while truck drivers are considered "essential" workers amid the coronavirus pandemic, a collapse in freight volumes - of which nearly 75% of are moved by truck - has resulted in the devastating loss of jobs as the economy remains at a standstill.
