Mauritius: Centre of a power struggle between the US and China

MAURITIUS - To most of us, Mauritius is a holiday paradise, a nirvana for eco-tourists and honeymooners far removed from the slings of world politics and global crises. But this balmy island in the Indian Ocean is now the unlikely epicentre of a chilling power struggle between America and China. At the heart of this rivalry is the remote Chagos Archipelago. It’s uninhabited except for the island of Diego Garcia, which hosts a major Anglo-American military base.

Why the dollar's dominance is declining in the Middle East

MIDDLE EAST - Iraq has just banned US-dollar transactions, the Saudis and Emiratis plan to sell oil without it and there are plans to establish a whole new currency to bypass it. To know why, first have a look at the war in Ukraine... Alternatives to the US dollar have led to a recent raft of alarmed headlines. "Is the dollar's dominance under threat?," The New York Times asked in February. "Prepare for a multipolar currency world," the Financial Times warned in March. "De-dollarization is happening at a 'stunning' pace," Bloomberg wrote late last month.

The US Should be a Force for Peace in the World

USA - The following is the text of a full-page ad by the Eisenhower Media Network in the New York Times on May 16, 2023. it is signed by prominent military and national security personnel.

"The Russia-Ukraine War has been an unmitigated disaster. Hundreds of thousands have been killed or wounded. Millions have been displaced. Environmental and economic destruction have been incalculable. Future devastation could be exponentially greater as nuclear powers creep ever closer toward open war. We deplore the violence, war crimes, indiscriminate missile strikes, terrorism, and other atrocities that are part of this war. The solution to this shocking violence is not more weapons or more war, with their guarantee of further death and destruction.

A Biblical Law That Would Change American Life

USA - One of the most remarkable laws in the Bible is in the Book of Deuteronomy: “Do not hate an Egyptian” [Deuteronomy 23:7]. It is remarkable because it was given to the generation of Israelites that had just been liberated from slavery in Egypt. This is one of many examples why America’s Founders regarded the Bible as the most important book ever written. According to one historian who studied the issue, the book the Founders quoted most often was Deuteronomy, the biblical book in which the law prohibiting hatred of Egyptians appears.

Popocatepetl volcano, near Mexico City, has rumbled back to life

MEXICO - Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano rumbled to life again this week, belching out towering clouds of ash that forced 11 villages to cancel school sessions. The residents weren't the only ones keeping a close eye on the towering peak. Every time there is a sigh, tic or heave in Popocatepetl, there are dozens of scientists, a network of sensors and cameras, and a roomful of powerful equipment watching its every move. The 17,797-foot volcano, known affectionately as “El Popo,” has been spewing toxic fumes, ash and lumps of incandescent rock persistently for almost 30 years, since it awakened from a long slumber in 1994.

The pope as peacemaker in a society that glorifies the military

VATICAN - A Catholic Church that continues to participate in society's reverence of military duty as the paragon of service to one's country will have a hard time being a credible voice for peace. Most people throughout the world live, to one extent or another, in militarized societies. What's most problematic about this is that many of us probably don't even realize or acknowledge it, such has the glorification of the military become so much part and parcel of our everyday culture. We have evidently become so convinced that our armed forces are the only thing keeping our nations and ways of life safe from foreign enemies that we uncritically (and probably unwittingly) participate in what has become a quasi-deification of military service. That is true even for peaceful countries in Europe like Italy... It's startling to arrive at Rome's international airport and be faced with the huge presence of soldiers walking around with machine guns in their hands.

The confusion is not merely around the Church – within the religions of the world outside – but WITHIN the very heart of The True Church itself!
